성 정하상 바오로는 한국 천주교의 정식 건립과 사제 초청을 위해 헌신을 기울인 평신도 지도자였으며, 자신의 삶을 오직 하느님께 바친 한국의 평신도 순교자들을 대표하는 성인이다.
부친인 복자 정약종(아우구스티노)과 모친인 성 유선임(체칠리아)에게서 태어난 성인은 형 복자 정철상(가를로)과 누이 성 정정혜(엘리사벳)와 함께 온갖 어려움을 겪으면서도, 하느님을 선택한 훌륭한 신앙인답게 교회를 위해 온 삶을 바치고자 하였다. 그는 성직자를 영입하고자 연행사절(燕行使節)의 마부(馬夫)가 되어 8∼9차례 걸어서 북경(北京)에 다녀왔으며(서울-북경 왕복 2,400km), 그 결과 유방제(劉方濟), 모방(Maubant), 샤스탕(Chastan) 신부와 앵베르(Imbert) 주교를 모셔왔고, 선교사를 도우면서 회장으로서 교회를 위해 헌신했다. 그는 앵베르 주교에 의해 신학생으로 선발되어 신학 교육을 받았지만, 그 결실이 맺기 전에 체포되어 1839년(기해년) 8월 서울 서소문밖 형장에서 순교하였다. 성인은 천주교의 기본 교리와 호교론(護敎論)를 전개하고, 신앙의 자유를 호소한 「상재상서」(上宰相書)를 남겼다. St. Paul Chung Hasang was the lay leader who devoted his efforts to the canonical erection of the Catholic Church in Korea and to inviting missionary priests to Korea. He represents one of the Korean lay martyrs who dedicated their lives to God alone.
Chung Hasang(Paul), was born in Korea to Blessed Chung Yakjong(Augustine) and St. Yu Seonim(Cecilia), along with his older brother, Blessed Chung Cheolsang(Galo), and sister St. Chung Jeonghye(Elisabeth). He and his family dedicated their entire life to the Catholic Church as great believers of God. He volunteered to be a coachman for the royal envoy to Beijing, China for bringing priests to Korea. He traveled to Beijing on foot nearly ten times(a distance of 2,400km) and as a result, Bishop Imbert, Fr. Yu Bangjae, Fr. Maubant, and Fr. Chastan arrived in Korea several years later.
St. Paul Chung Hasang devoted himself to the Church by serving as a leader of the Catholic community while also helping missionaries. He was selected as a seminarian by Bishop Imbert and educated in Latin and theology, but he was arrested before being ordained. In August of 1839(year of Gihae), he was martyred at the execution ground outside of Seosomun, Seoul. He developed the catechism of the Catholic Church in Korea and composed Sangjaesangseo, in which he appealed for freedom of faith.
St. Paul Chung Hasang was beatified on July 5, 1925, and canonized on May 6, 1984.
